We are home again and still processing our time in Liberia. The transition back to everyday life feels strange, as our weeks at ELWA Hospital already seem both distant and deeply formative.
Compassionate Care in Challenging Conditions
At ELWA Hospital, patients arrive with serious medical needs—burns, wounds, infections, and surgical complications that require skill, persistence, and teamwork. Despite limited resources and challenging conditions, the hospital staff consistently provides attentive, professional, and compassionate care. Healing is not only hoped for—it is actively pursued, tracked, and celebrated.
What left the strongest impression was the team's commitment. Nurses, technicians, and physicians work together seamlessly, supporting one another and advocating for patients day after day. Faith is naturally woven into the hospital culture, expressed through gratitude, prayer, and songs of praise that echo through daily routines.
Resilience and Gratitude
Life in Liberia presents real challenges: long commutes, modest wages, frequent power interruptions, and a demanding climate. Yet ELWA Hospital operates with remarkable resilience. Staff adapt quickly to changing conditions and remain deeply thankful for each day, each patient, and each opportunity to serve.
Daily chapel gatherings set the tone—grounding the work in faith, gratitude, and shared purpose. This spiritual foundation strengthens morale and sustains the hospital’s mission of care and hope.
Strengthening Patient Safety
One focus of our time was improving critical infrastructure in the operating rooms. Reliable power during brief outages is essential for patient safety. Through careful coordination and generous support from partners back home, a new battery backup system was installed, significantly improving reliability for surgical procedures.
This upgrade is a lasting investment—one that directly supports better patient outcomes and strengthens the hospital’s long-term capacity.
